WEB ACCESSIBLE REMOTE HF STATION
Thanks to the generous support of Waukesha County Technical College (WCTC) we are putting the former WCTC club station on the air as K9RHH and making it available to Wisconsin area amateur radio operators who otherwise would not be able to get on HF. This 100 watt, 80 through 10 meter station has a tri-band Yagi antenna on a tower with dipoles for the other bands. The station can be remotely controlled through a high speed internet connection and computer. The software required for the computer is free and there is no cost to use the station. Wisconsin Amateur Radio Club plans to have this station active by June of 2009. At that time, we will post information as to how to schedule operating slots.
WHEELING FOR HEALING
The first Wheeling For Healing was held in 1998 and 500 people participated raised more than $15,000. It was also the first event for our club as volunteers. As volunteers our club members help as Net Control, rest stop communications, corner communication, sag wagon communication, ambulance communications and staff assignment. August 2008 marks the eleventh year and each year has been bigger and better. The 2008 ride raised $45,000.00 for the Cancer Care Center and hosted almost 2000 riders. Unfortunately, in 2009, the event was cancelled due to a heavy rain. Our club has expanded operations with 18 operators and using two motorcycle rovers to cover the 15 and 32-mile routes. The Wisconsin Amateur Radio Club is proud to volunteer for this wonderful event that brings community together to fight against cancer and to honor those who are cancer survivors.
COMMUNITY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL
The Wisconsin Amateur Radio Club works with the hospital in the event of emergencies. We began in 1999/2000 when it was feared that communication would break down. Club members were at the hospital for over three hours. We had one antenna up and used hand held radios to communicate from the phone operator’s room. Later, the hospital remodeled, building a Board Room/Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and asked us what equipment would be needed. We indicated that another antenna would be needed for the EOC. Since then our Club has installed a complete radio setup in the EOC and another in the phone operator’s room as a backup. We continue to explore new advanced communications that will aid the hospital in emergencies.
GERMANTOWN POLICE DEPARTMENT
In 2008 the Wisconsin Amateur Radio Club needed a new place to meet. The police chief was approached for permission to use the old library building and he responded very positively as he wanted to use amateur radio for a backup in the event of emergencies. Since then we have installed an antenna on the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) building and have a complete radio setup there as well as another in the dispatcher’s room. We are also looking for new advances in communication that will help establish better communications between the Germantown Police Department and Community Memorial Hospital.
